The New York University
top-ranked women's basketball team extended its nation-high winning streak to 55 games with an 86-62 victory over Case Western Reserve University on Sunday, February 23, at the John A. Paulson Center in Manhattan.
The Violets' streak is currently the 12-longest in NCAA women's basketball history.
NYU (24-0, 13-0) celebrated Senior Day in grand fashion, never trailing the Spartans (7-17, 2-11) in the University Athletic Association (UAA) contest.
The Violets only led 13-12, but scored the final six points of the first quarter.
Case Western Reserve crept within three at 25-22, but the Violets ended the second quarter on a 13-4 streak to take a 38-26 lead at halftime.
NYU never relinquished its double-digit lead the rest of the way and extended its advantage to as many as 29 points in the second half.
Graduate students
Jamie Behar and
Natalie Bruns, along with seniors
Mary Kate Fahey,
Belle Pellecchia and
Chloe Teter were honored in a pre-game ceremony. None of the players have suffered a home loss during their NYU careers.
"This group has transcended NYU Basketball," said Head Coach
Meg Barber. "What I'm most proud of is that they are amazing people both on and off the court, and this day was all about them,"
Pellecchia led the Violets with 20 points, while Bruns (16, points, 10 rebounds, 8 assists) and
Brooke Batchelor (12 points, 11 rebounds) each recorded double-doubles.
Caroline Peper added 17 points.
The Violets finish the regular-season on Saturday, March 1, when they travel to Waltham, MA, for a game against host Brandeis University. Tip-off is set for 3:00pm.
