For a fourth straight season, the New York University women's basketball team has earned at least a share of the University Athletic Association (UAA) Championship, clinching it with an 87-58 win over the University of Rochester on Sunday, February, 16, in Rochester, NY.
Though the Violets trailed to start the game, down 5-3 through the first two minutes, NYU quickly jumped in front with a 13-2 run and did not relinquish the lead for the remainder of the afternoon.
Jamie Behar scored 11 of her game's 16 points in the opening frame.
After the Violets went up 34-19 just over halfway into the second quarter, the Yellowjackets trimmed the deficit to nine with three straight buckets. Over the last three minutes of the quarter, however, NYU held Rochester scoreless and knocked down a pair of shots from the field to take a 38-25 advantage into the break.
The Violets further distanced themselves from the Yellowjackets with a 14-4 run to start the second half and went up 52-29. Within the third quarter alone,
Caroline Peper scored 11 points, highlighted by three made shots from beyond the arc.
Four of five NYU starters entered double-figures, led by
Natalie Bruns with a game-high 19 points on 9-of-20 shooting from the floor. Bruns also added eight rebounds, three assists, three blocks, and a steal. Behar tied a season-high with four made three-pointers.
The Violets' 29-point win marked their third straight season sweep of Rochester and 53rd straight win, currently tied for the 13th longest streak in NCAA women's collegiate basketball history.
NYU will return to its home floor on Friday, February 21, when it welcomes Carnegie Mellon University to the John A. Paulson Center with a chance to clinch its fourth consecutive outright UAA Championship.
