The
top-ranked and undefeated New York University women's basketball team clinched its fourth consecutive University Athletic Association (UAA) Championship with an 83-52 victory over Carnegie Mellon University on Friday, February 21, at the John A. Paulson Center in Manhattan.
The Violets have now won 54 straight games, the longest current streak at all levels, women or men, and tied for the 12th-longest in NCAA women's collegiate basketball history.
The Violets again led from start to finish, but were tested as the Tartans pulled within 10 points, 54-44, with 1:37 remaining in the third quarter. However,
Caroline Peper answered with a three-pointer and NYU closed on an 8-2 run.
The Violets never led by less than 14 the rest of the way and pulled away to the 31-point victory.
"This was for our seniors," said Head Coach
Meg Barber. "We wanted to make sure they enjoyed this Senior Weekend, and there's no better way than with a UAA Championship."
Natalie Bruns led the Violets with game-highs of 21 points and 10 rebounds.
Peper finished with 19 points and a game-high six assists.
Mary Kate Fahey scored 15 points and
Belle Pellecchia had 11.
The Violets will celebrate Senior Day on Sunday with a home contest against Case Western Reserve University. Tip-off at the Paulson Center is set for 12:00pm.
