The New York University wrestling team competed at the NYS Collegiate Championships Open, hosted by Onondaga Community College, on Saturday, November 22, in Syracuse, NY.
The Violets finished in third place with 99.5 points.The United States Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA) won the competition with 129.
Two Violets won their brackets:
Alexander Diaz at 125 pounds and
Justin Mayes at 184.
Diaz, the #1 seed, produced one fall and one technical fall on his way to the win. He beat Cadell Lee from USMMA by decision in the final.
Mayes won on a sudden victory over Nash Banko from USMMA to claim the title. He also produced one fall and one technical fall on his way to victory.
"Alex and Justin had outstanding tournaments," Associate Head Coach
Corey Luce said. "Both weight classes were loaded, so it was great to see them both come out on top."
Both
Harrison Gordon (133) and
Vincenzo Napolitana (149) took third place in their respective competitions. Gordon ended his day with a 25-14 major decision against Rocco Futia from SUNY Cortland, while Napolitana won a 10-6 decision against Brandon Ribeiro from Ithaca College.
Alexander Kaufmann and
Jack Bowen finished fourth and fifth in the 165-pound class, respectively, and
Bennett Sonneborn finished in fifth in the 197-pound class.
"Great tournament overall," added Luce. "Proud of the way the guys performed."
The Violets next get on the mat when they host Felician University at the John A. Paulson Center on Tuesday, November 25, at 6pm.
