The
second-ranked New York University women's swimming and diving team continued competition at the Phoenix Fall Classic hosted by the University of Chicago on Saturday, November 22.
The Violets came into the day in first place and maintained their lead with another dominant performance. Their 1,824.5 points ranks nearly 600 points above second-place University of Chicago who has 1,258.
NYU set the tone for an outstanding night with a sweep of the top four places in the 400-yard IM.
Bethany Spangler (4:24.82) took first place and secured an NCAA "Q" cut.
Calista Lynch (4:27.72), Zeynup Tokuz (4:27.81), and
Sophie Cox (4:27.93) took second, third, and fourth, respectively. All three earned NCAA "B" cuts.
A one-two punch of
Nicole Ranile (54.85) and
Reina Gomez (55.35) secured first and second place, respectively, in the 100-yard butterfly. Both finished under the NCAA "Q" cut time.
In the 200-yard freestyle,
Kaley McIntyre took first place and earned an NCAA "Q" cut with a time of 1:47.11. Behind her in second place was
Llew Ladomirak (1:49.62), who also notched an NCAA "Q" cut.
Ranile took first place in the 100-yard backstroke, clocking in at 54.70. O'Donnell (54.75) placed second, while
Sarah Pierson (56.07) secured fourth, and all three Violets earned NCAA "Q" cuts.
The Violets closed out the night with a strong 800-yard freestyle relay that secured first place. Ranile, McIntyre,
Aanya Wala, and Ladomirak recorded a time of (7:23.95), good enough for an NCAA "Q" cut.
"Our women were outstanding tonight. It was the kind of night where our depth really showed," said Head Coach
Trevor Miele. "Bethany set the tone with an incredible win in the 400 IM and the group backing her up with a 1-2-3-4 sweep all under the NCAA cut says everything about their preparation and competitiveness."
The top diver for the Violets was
Meera Kasturi who took fourth place with 429.90 points.
"Our divers looked good today. The top three UChicago divers were all in the top 12 at NCAAs last year, but we stayed right with them," said Head Diving Coach
Todd Kolean. "We are even stronger on the 3 meter dive so we are looking forward to tomorrow."
The Violets return to action at the Phoenix Fall Classic tomorrow, as they seek to secure the victory on the final day of competition. Swimming will begin at 10 a.m CT with finals at 5 p.m CT. Diving is scheduled for 1 p.m. CT.
