The New York University women's swimming team opened competition at the Phoenix Fall Classic on Friday, November 21, in Chicago, IL.
Currently ranked
second in the nation, the Violets had a strong first-day showing, ending in first place with 733 points. They are over 250 points ahead of the University of Chicago, which sits in second place with 481.5 points.
An outstanding NYU performance was highlighted by
Kaley McIntyre, who set a pool record (22.55) in the preliminaries and then took first place in the 50 yard freestyle, earning an NCAA "Q" cut with a time of 22.66 in the finals. Also earning a "Q" cut in the 50 free was
Maeve O'Donnell, who came in second place (23.09).
The 200 yard freestyle relay of McIntyre,
Lian Jeong Engle,
Llew Ladomirak, and O'Donnell finished and made an NCAA "Q" cut. Strong splits from Ladomirak and O'Donnell helped earn a time of 1:31.50.
In the 200 yard IM,
Ella Romberg took second place and secured an NCAA "Q" cut with a time of 2:05.04. Also earning an NCAA "Q" cut in the race was
Calista Lynch (2:05.41).
Babette Bradley finished right behind her in fifth place (2:05.85).
Aanya Wala (4:55.98),
Emery Muller (4:57.35), and
Bethany Spangler (4:58.80) took second, fourth, and fifth, respectively in the 500 yard freestyle. All three earned NCAA "Q" cuts.
"Our women opened the meet with a huge statement," said Head Coach
Trevor Miele. "It was a great start with lots of NCAA cuts and we really showed our depth."
The Violets continue the Phoenix Fall Classic as the divers join in on the action tomorrow, with swimming events scheduled for 10:00 a.m and 5:30 p.m CT. Diving is set for 1 p.m. CT.
