Violets Post 1-0 Win Over Rutgers-Camden

The New York University men's soccer team grinded out a 1-0 win against Rutgers-Camden University on a wet Saturday afternoon in a home contest played at New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) in Newark, NJ.

The Violets (2-0-1) were kept to only nine shots, four on goal, their lowest tally of the season so far.

"It was not a great performance," said Head Coach Kim Wyant. "We figured out a way to win. The other team made a mistake and we were in a position to capitalize on that. I thought that defensively in the box, we were tight, fighting for balls and shutting down any opportunities that they had. And Jackson (McCloskey) came up big a few times. Of course, the post did too."

McCloskey produced an outstanding double-save to keep the first half goal-less, and went on to register five saves on either side of halftime.

Overall, the Scarlet Raptors out-shot the Violets 19-9, 10-4 on goal.

As heavy rain started to come down in the second half, both sides had chances. However, neither threatened to score.

With 10 minutes left to play, a loose Rutgers-Camden pass fell to Nathan Bennett, who took a touch and slotted it into the bottom far right corner for his third goal of the season.

"We're real committed as a team to playing our style of soccer and our game model," said Wyant. "We were having a lot of trouble building the ball out of the back and getting into the final third. We probably did a better job in the first half. Nonetheless, we're going to stay committed to that."

The men's soccer team returns to NJIT on Wednesday, September 11, to host St. Joseph's University Brooklyn at 7:00pm.
