The New York University men's soccer team continued its unbeaten start to the season, coming out 2-1 winners against the St. Joseph's University Brooklyn Bears on Wednesday, September 11, at New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) in Newark, NJ.
The Violets (3-0-1) were down 1-0 in the first half, after a mistake allowed Bears' striker Victor Naci to score just nine minutes in.
NYU did not threaten the opposing team's goalkeeper, Christian Chimborazo, in the first half, only registering four shots.
"We started slow, and it took us a while to grow into the game," said Head Coach
Kim Wyant. "At halftime, I said, 'Listen, we've been here already, everyone just needs to stay calm. We need to press higher, create turnovers, and give them less time on the ball. Get on the ball and play our game.'"
The NYU attack started flowing in the second half. The Violets peppered the net until, in the 57th minute,
Ahmed Ibrahim put in an in-swinging cross, which missed everyone including the goalkeeper, and defender
Felix Dyckerhoff leathered the ball in for the equalizer at 57:01.
The tie lasted less than a minute, as
Vic Williams was able to find
Bryce Lexow outside the penalty box. He took a touch and snuck the ball in at the goalkeeper's near post to make it 2-1 at 57:56.
Lexow now has four goals this season, one short of his total from last year.
Though the Violets kept the pressure on, no more goals were scored and they hung on for the victory.
NYU out-shot St. Joseph's 15-7 overall and 7-2 on goal.
"I had total confidence that we would be able to come back in the second half," said Wyant. "We grabbed a goal back early, and you see, a minute later, we got the other goal. It was a very good turnaround."
The Violets are back in action again on Sunday, September 15, in Harrisburg, PA, to play Penn State Harrisburg at 5:00pm.
