Drops Tough Three-Setter at ITA Regionals

New York University All-American Boren Zheng dropped a three-set match to Aiden Drover-Mattinen of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) in the semifinals of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA ) Northeast Regional Championships on Sunday, September 29, in Madison, NJ.

Zheng won the first set 6-2, but could not sustain the momentum in dropping the final two 6-0, 6-1 to the tournament's #1 seed.

"It was a disappointing loss," said Head Coach Horace Choy. "Boren started out very well and put a lot of pressure on his opponent. He got up two breaks of serve and was able to close out a well-contested first set. But, a couple of unlucky breaks on no-ad points early in the second put him in a hole. After that, his level dipped a little while Aidan played a lot cleaner."

Zheng had advanced to the semis with two victories on Friday and two more on Sunday.

"Boren competed to the end, but was unable to turn things around," Choy added.

There was no team scoring at the Championships.

This three-day competition marked the end of the Violets' fall schedule, and the squad will return to action when they travel to RPI for a match on Saturday, February 22, 2025.
