Women's Volleyball Hosts UAA Round Robin #1

Violets Split a Pair of Matches

The New York University women's volleyball team and the John A. Paulson Center were hosts to the University Athletic Association (UAA) Round Robin #1 on Saturday, September 28, in Manhattan.

All eight UAA squad are competing in the two-day event.

The #13-ranked Violets faced two opponents on Saturday, facing off against Carnegie Mellon University in their opening matching and then closing out against Brandeis University.

The Violets started off well against the Tartans, taking the first set, but ultimately fell in five 20-25, 25-21, 25-21, 20-25, 15-9.

With its back squarely up against the proverbial wall, NYU rallied to take the fourth set against teh Tartans. The score was tied 18-18 when Grace Nelson's kill sparked a 6-0 run.

The Violets held the lead the rest of the way to force the deciding fifth set.

However, despite scoring the first point of the fifth set, NYU could not keep its momentum as the Tartans took the lead at 3-2 and never relinquished it.

Nelson finished with a team-high 14 kills, while Chloe Lemons added 11. Ava Launsbach (19) and Dominique Drust (12) each had double-digit kills, with Yooni Park (44) and Launsbach (15) doing the same in digs.

The Violets did get back to their winning ways in the second match, going four sets to defeat the Judges 25-21, 16-25, 25-19, 25-15.

After Brandeis evened the match at 1-1, the pivotal third set was tied 18-18 when a kill from Sarah Lattan led NYU to a game-ending 7-1 run.

The final set was never in doubt as the Violets raced out to a 10-3 lead and were not seriously threatened.

Nelson again led the way with 13 kills. Launsbach (18) and Drust (10) again had double-digit kills, while Park paced NYU with 18 digs.

The Violets will play one more match on Sunday at 12:00pm when they host the University of Chicago back at the Paulson Center.
