On the final day of the University Athletic Association (UAA) Round Robin #1, the
#13-ranked New York University Women's Volleyball team dropped a five-set match to the University of Chicago on Sunday, September 29, in Manhattan. The Violets finished the round robin with one win and two losses.
After NYU fell behind 8-3 in the opening set, the Violets got back to within two with a 3-0 run. With the Maroons later ahead 14-12, three straight points from the University of Chicago gave it a five-point advantage. Immediately after, NYU followed it up with a 5-1 run to cut the deficit to one. The Maroons then grew their lead to 22-19, but a 5-2 run from the Violets evened the score, 24-24. NYU managed to stave off two more set points before winning the frame, 28-26.
Tied 8-8 in the second set, the University of Chicago used a 9-1 run to take the lead for good. The Violets could not cut the deficit to less than five, as the Maroons took the stanza, 25-17.
Though NYU trailed 8-4 to begin the third frame, the Violets made it a one-point set, down 14-13. The two teams then traded points over the next nine rallies before five consecutive points by NYU gave it a 22-19 edge. The Maroons managed to stave off back-to-back set points, but
Coco Barton clinched the frame with a kill.
The Violets opened the fourth stanza with a 1-0 advantage, but would not lead for the remainder of the set, as a 6-1 University of Chicago run gave the Maroons the lead for good. Despite NYU getting back to within three, down 15-12, the University of Chicago pushed the match to five frames with a 25-14 set win.
The Maroons began the decisive fifth set with a 4-0 lead, but saw their advantage get cut to 6-4. After the Violets got to within one, trailing 10-9, three consecutive University of Chicago points put the Maroons ahead by four. The University of Chicago then went on to claim the match with a 15-12 set win.
Chloe Lemons posted a team-high 15 kills, while
Dominique Drust provided 25 assists.
Yooni Park collected 31 digs.
NYU will next face Smith College on Friday, October 4, at 7:00pm at the John A. Paulson Center.
