The New York University men's tennis team began competition at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Northeast Regional Championships on Friday, September 27, at Drew University in Madison, NJ.
A pair of Violets won two singles matches and have advanced to the Round of 16.
All-American
Boren Zheng defeated Rahul Ravi of the University of Rochester 6-3, 6-3, before digging deep to outlast Griffin Biernat of Skidmore College 6-7, 7-6, 10-8.
Also advancing was
Bryan Hui, who eked out a tough match against Lleyton Mendieta of Hamilton College 6-4, 6-7, 10-8 before defeating Brett Schuster of The College of New Jersey 6-3, 6-3 to advance to Saturday's Round of 16.
"Boren and Brian overcame some adversity to reach the round of 16," said Head Coach
Horace Choy. "Bryan came out on top in a match tiebreaker in a tightly contested first round match while Boren faced a match tiebreaker in the second round. Both players saved their best tennis for those moments. The path will get harder tomorrow and I hope that they will play at the level they are capable of."
Jingyuan Chen won his first-round match 6-2, 6-2, but was eliminated in the Round of 32.
Action will resume Saturday morning.
