Women's Soccer Scores Big Against John Jay

Violets Post 8-1 Win Over Bloodhounds

The New York University women's soccer team defeated John Jay College 8-1, their biggest win this season so far, in a home contest at the New Jersey Institute of Technology on Thursday, September 26.

The #19-ranked Violets remain undefeated with a 6-0-3 record.

"We were working on the attacking third and creating higher quality scoring opportunities," said Head Coach Scott Waddell. "We knew they would try to frustrate us, but it was great that everyone got involved with the goals."

The Violets scored five goals in the first half, with the first coming within four minutes. Defender Riley Mullady found midfielder Kelli Keady down the left wing. She drove to the byline and cut it back for midfielder Hope Neale, who shot first-time from around the penalty spot for her third goal of the season.

Defender Elizabeth Argenziano recorded her first assist, an inch-perfect cross from the right wing that forward Hunter Hoelscher tapped in from two yards for the Violets' second goal.

The Bloodhounds cut the deficit in half five minutes later, scoring from a pass that broke the Violets' defensive line. Goalkeeper Riley Felsher came out to meet the striker, but was unable to block the ball for John Jay's consolation goal.

The third goal came in the 32nd minute, when midfielder Julia Spang managed to elude two of John Jays' defenders to slip in forward Alexa Buxbaum for a first-time right-footed shot into the bottom right corner. This was Spang's first goal contribution of her collegiate career.

Spang was involved in the fourth goal, as well. She managed to evade one Bloodhound defender, but was brought down by another defender right outside the 18-yard box, and won the free kick. Midfielder Isa Badillo scored directly from the free kick to restore the Violets' two-goal advantage.

The fifth goal came with 35 seconds left on the first half clock. Forward Carmen Cicerini assisted fellow forward Marlee Scanlon, scoring with a low left-footed shot into the far right corner.

The Violets got the second half underway with another goal two minutes in. It was Keady again with another assist, this time for Monday's hattrick hero Rena Kalargiros to tap it in from eight yards.

Keady got on the score sheet herself as well unassisted, scoring the Violets' seventh goal with a low shot into the bottom left corner. Hoelscher rounded out the Violets' stellar performance with her second goal of the match, with Argenziano racking up her second assist, as well.

"Kelli is probably on everyone's scouting report and the opposing team is always going to try and defend against her," said Waddell. "She was able to create two goals and score one herself, though, so she's always fun to watch."

The Violets travel to Scranton, PA, on Tuesday, October. 1, to play Scranton University.
