Members of the New York University men's tennis team opened the 2024-25 season with competition against players from Ithaca College at The College of New Jersey (TCNJ) Invitational on Saturday, September 14, in Ewing, NJ.
A total of 10 singles matches and four doubles matches were played in this non-team-scoring event.
"It was good to see the guys back in action. They have been working hard and I wanted to get an idea of where they were in match play," said Head Coach
Horace Choy."
The Violets were victorious in eight of the singles tilts and three of the doubles.
Returning All-American
Boren Zheng won his singles match in straight sets 6-3, 7-5. He did not compete in doubles.
Winners for the Violets in singles were
Louis Frowein,
Ryan Shayani, Zachary Freier,
Devan Sabapathy, Ronak Khara, Tomas Medina, and
Bryan Hui.
Doubles winners were Frowein/
Jingyuan Chen, Freier/
Nithin Sankar, and Medina/Shayani.
"We are off to a good start winning three of four four doubles and eight of 10 singles matches," Choy added. "There is still work to be done but a good start. Saw good play from our returnees and the newcomers as well. TCNj will be a tougher team tomorrow, but it will give us a better gauge of where we are."
The two-day invitational will continue on Sunday when the Violets face host TCNJ.
