The New York University men's soccer team opened its 2024 season with a resounding 7-0 win over Purchase College on Sunday, September 1, in Newark, NJ.
Five different players scored for the Violets, with
Bryce Lexow and
Nathan Bennett each contributing a pair.
"It was great to get on the field and start the competitive part of our season," said Head Coach
Kim Wyant. "We played a couple of tough matches out in Colorado during the preseason, so I knew we'd be prepared for today."
It didn't take long for the Violets to take the lead as
Ahmed Ibrahim netted the first goal at 13:22. That score was quickly followed by
Terra Nagai's goal at 22:49.
That was all the scoring in the first half, but the pace accelerated in the second.
Lexow scored the first two goals of the second half, both coming off penalty kicks at 62:16 and 65:52, respectively.
Bennett's two goals came at 68:20 and 77:23.
NYU's final goal scorer was
Ben Trask, who converted at 81:01.
"It was great to have multiple goal scorers and combine that with a shutout," Wyant added. "Overall, I was super-pleased with our start."
NYU keeper
Jackson McCloskey recorded three saves to earn the shutout.
The Violets out-shot the Panthers 34-6, 21-3 on goal.
The Violets return to the pitch on Wednesday, September 4, when they travel to Riverdale, NY, for a match-up with the University of Mount St. Vincent at 7:00pm.
