Baseball Splits with Emory

Violets Win Opener 12-1, Drop Game Two 13-7

New York University's baseball team split its University Athletic Association (UAA) doubleheader against Emory University on Saturday, April 6, at the Staten Island University Hospital Community Park in Staten Island, NY.

The Violets rolled in game one, winning 12-1 after a six-run first inning. But, Emory took game two 13-7 despite NYU's ninth-inning rally. NYU is now 15-8 on the season and 2-5 in the UAA.

Game 1: NYU 12, Emory 1 (7 Innings)

The Eagles scored the first run of the day in the top of the first, but NYU plated six of its own in the bottom half to take control. It began when Nate Pallotta was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to tie the score 1-1, then Richard Beggy roped a two-run single to put the Violets ahead.

A bases loaded walk drawn by Connor Roggero gave NYU its fourth run, before an Emory throwing error allowed two more runs to come in. The second and third were both scoreless, but Roggero recorded his second RBI of the day with a sac fly in the top of the fourth to make it 7-1.

The Violets pushed three more runs across in the fifth via a Cam Dunn RBI double, Pallotta sac fly and a wild pitch that allowed Dunn to score. It was still 10-1 entering the bottom of the seventh, but Dunn launched a two-run homer to right which enacted the 10-run rule and gave NYU a walk-off win.

Dunn went 3-for-5 with three runs, three RBIs, a double and a home run. Beggy and Pallotta posted two hits apiece and Nick Argenziano scored three runs.

Paul Guerne earned the pitching win for NYU, going 5.2 innings while allowing just one run on five hits and four walks with a trio of strikeouts. Tyler Tedeschi tossed the final 1.1 innings and held Emory scoreless.

Game 2: Emory 13, NYU 7

Emory notched two runs in both the first and second innings while blanking NYU to take a 4-0 lead into the third. A scoreless third inning followed, but both teams plated three runs in the fourth. The Violets' scoring came on a Beggy RBI single, Roggero driving in a run with a fielder's choice and a balk with a runner on third.

The fifth was also scoreless, then the Eagles added an insurance run in the top of the sixth. It got interesting in the bottom of the sixth though, as NYU scored a pair after Jack Kelman's RBI single to left and a catcher's interference with a runner on third to bring the Violets within three (8-5).

However, Emory didn't slow down and plated five runs across its final two at-bats to make it 13-5 heading into the bottom of the ninth. The Violets rallied, culminating in a two-run double off the bat of Alex VanLandingham, but the scoring ended there.

VanLandingham (3-for-4, two RBIs, a run and a double) and Beggy (3-for-4, three runs, RBI, double) delivered three hits each to lead the NYU offense.

The Eagles and Violets conclude their UAA series tomorrow, April 7, with an 11:00am first pitch at SIUH Community Park.
