The #7-seeded Violets faced the #2 seed Emory University in their first match of the Championship and were defeated 5-0.
NYU entered the three-day event ranked #46 in the nation by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA), while Emory is at #5.
Friday's match began with the doubles competition, where the Violets'
Jimena Menendez and
Aditi Narayan fell 8-4 at #2. NYU's #1 team of
Dakota Fordham and
Isabella Hartman was defeated 8-2, and the #3 tandem of
Tess Heber and
Hannah Chang fell 8-1.
NYU also went winless in singles as Heber lost 6-1, 6-0 at #5 and Narayan was shutout 6-0, 6-0 at #4.
The match was halted at that point with the Eagles clinching the match.
Menendez, who is
ranked #16 nationally by the ITA, was ahead in her #1 singles match vs top-ranked Emily Kantrovitz when the competition ended.
"We played well, but had some nerves early on," said Head Coach
Horace Choy. "We needed to execute better and be more aggressive when it was called for. Emory is a very deep team and proved it today."
