The New York University men's tennis team defeated the University of Rochester 5-3 on Friday, April 26, on the second day of competition at the University Athletic Association (UAA) Championship in Alamonte Springs, FL.
The Violets entered the Championship as the #6 seed, while the Yellowjackets were seeded #7.
NYU got off to a slow, winning only one of the three doubles matches. The victory was secured at #2, as
Jingyuan Chen and
Louis Frowein defeated Rochester's Kei Ogawa and Krish Vennam 8-3.
However, the Violets caught up with
Cooper Smith's victory at #5 (6-3, 6-3) and took the lead on Frowein's #3 victory, also 6-3, 6-3.
Rumaish Khastgir added to the lead with a 6-1, 6-4 victory at #4, and then
Boren Zheng clinched the victory with a comeback three-set win at #1 (4-6, 6-3, 6-2).
"I'm happy with how we rallied after doubles," said Head Coach
Horace Choy. "We came out a bit flat and Rochester came out ready to play. But, we were able to rally in singles and got contributions throughout the lineup."
The Violets will now face Carnegie Mellon University, the #5 seed, in the fifth-place match on Saturday.
