Violets Lose a Pair at Emory

The New York University softball team dropped a University Athletic Association (UAA) doubleheader to host Emory University on Friday, April 19, in Atlanta, GA.

The Violets (6-22, 1-13) fell 9-6 and 15-8 to the home-standing Eagles (21-13-7).

NYU took a pair of one-run leads early in the opener. Lily Candelaria's RBI single put the Violets ahead 1-0 in the top of the first inning and she did likewise in the fourth to give NYU a 2-1 lead.

However, Emory scored three in the bottom of the fourth to take the lead for good.

RBI doubles by Lizzy Smith in the top of the fifth and Chloe Stone in the top of the sixth kept NYU within a run, but a four-run outburst by the Eagles in the bottom of the sixth cemented their victory.

The Violets did score again in the top of the seventh on RBI's from Smith and Candelaria, but the rally fell short.

Smith finished with three hits, two RBI's and two runs scored, while Candelaria had a pair of hits and knocked in three runs. Lindsey Baron went 2-for-2 with a walk and scored two runs.

Starter Monique Kamrowski went the first four innings and suffered the loss.

Things started well for the Violets in the nitecap, as the visitors scored four runs in the bottom of the first. RBI's were produce by Smith, Caroline Hofmann and Claire Carson, while Baron stole home for another run.

It was a short-lived lead as Emory plated nine runs in the bottom of the inning.

NYU clawed back with two in the third inning on Emma Aridi's two-run double, but the Eagles responded with four runs in the bottom half. The Violets got two more back in the fourth via RBI singles from Hofmann and Carson, but those were their final runs of the game.

Baron (4-for-5), Hofmann (3-for-4), Smith (2-for-5) and Madi Hand (2-for-3) all had multiple hits in game two.

The two teams conclude their series with another doubleheader tomorrow, April 20, with game one beginning at 12:00pm in Atlanta.
