New York University's softball team split its University Athletic Association (UAA) doubleheader against Carnegie Mellon University on Sunday, April 14, at the College of Staten Island in Staten Island, NY.
The Violets dropped game one 9-3, but their 5-2 victory in game two represented the team's first UAA win of the campaign.
NYU opened the scoring in game one on
Lizzy Smith's RBI double in the bottom of the first, but CMU scored four in the second to take control. The Tartans then out-scored NYU 3-0 over the next three frames and took a 7-1 advantage into the sixth.
The Violets rallied in the bottom of the sixth, pushing a pair of runs across on
Madi Hand's two-run double. But, the scoring stopped there and Carnegie Mellon secured the victory.
Alexa Very had the Violets' lone multi-hit game in the opener (2-for-3) as she, Hand and Smith each recorded a double.
Game two was all NYU, however, led by
Karleigh Kluever's complete-game victory in the circle. She hurled a three-hitter across seven full innings, allowing just two runs (one earned) with three walks and three strikeouts.
It was a low-scoring affair early on, as the Tartans scraped across a single run in both the first and third to lead 2-0. But, the Violets' bats came alive in the bottom of the third as they scored four runs to go ahead for good.
The four runs came on two swings of the bat, with Very driving in a pair on a double to left center while Hand stepped up next and launched a two-run homer over the left field fence for her third long-ball of the weekend.
Margaux Lesser's RBI single in the fourth was the final run of the game as the last three frames were scoreless and NYU got back into the win column.
Nicole Cicchetti finished 3-for-3 with two runs scored and a double. Very and
Lindsey Baron added two hits apiece.
NYU heads back on the road for its next UAA series, taking on Emory University on Friday, April 19, in Atlanta, GA.
