Mason Morello pitched a two-hit shutout and the New York University baseball team lifted its 2024 record to 7-1 with a 7-0 win over the College of Mount St. Vincent on Saturday, March 9, at the Staten Island University Hospital Community Park on Staten Island, NY.
Morello was brilliant on the mound, allowing only a pair of singles and issuing one walk while striking out five in going the distance. He is now 3-0 this season with a 1.19 ERA and 19 strikeouts in 22.2 innings.
Today's performance represented the first-ever nine-inning shutout thrown by an NYU pitcher since the program began at the NCAA Division III level in 2015.
"Mason is a pitcher. He's hard-working, intelligent, has baseball acumen, all the intangibles," lauded Head Coach
Doug Kimbler. "And he's a leader and all-around good guy. This was easily the best-pitched game we've had during my tenure."
Connor Roggero's RBI double in the second inning provided Morello with all of the offense he would need.
However, the Violet attack did not stop there, as NYU plated three more runs in the third highlighted by
Nick Argenziano's RBI double and
Alex VanLandingham's two-RBI single.
NYU added single runs in the fifth, sixth and eight innings to close out the scoring.
Nate Pallotta hit his team-leading third home run of the season in the fifth,
Harrison Blueweiss had an RBI double in the 6th, and Roggero's sacrifice fly capped the scoring in the eighth.
"Nate is seeing the ball well and taking really good swings," Kimbler said. "He's a leader in the dugout, locker room, everywhere, all of the time."
The Violets have outscored their opponents 93-32 so far this season, are hitting .393 as a team and sporting a 3.94 ERA.
"We are far ahead of where we were at this time last year, mainly due to the new (Branca Family) facility we have now where our guys are able to get their work in every day," Kimbler added. "And it show in the results.
The Violets will be back on Staten Island tomorrow when they again host Mount St. Vincent for a doubleheader beginning at 11:00am.
