Baseball Wins a Pair

Violets Sweep Weekend Series vs. UMSV

New York University's baseball team won both ends of its doubleheader against the University of Mount Saint Vincent on Sunday at the Staten Island University Hospital Community Park.

The Violets triumphed in game one 6-3 and won game two 9-1, taking all three games against UMSV this weekend to improve to 9-1 on the season.

Game 1: NYU 6, UMSV 3

Both teams plated a run in the first inning before NYU's bats got going in the bottom of the second, scoring four to take a 5-1 lead early on. Nick Argenziano's two-run double to left accounted for half of the Violets' runs in the frame.

NYU's final run of the game came in the bottom of the third on a passed ball, giving the hosts a 6-1 advantage which they held until the top of the fifth.

In that fifth inning the Dolphins scored twice to come within three runs, 6-3, but those were the final tallies of the contest as NYU held on for the victory.

Starting pitcher Andrew Reid got the pitching win, tossing five full innings and allowing three runs (two earned) on just two hits and three walks while striking out six.

Jason Pearson pitched a scoreless sixth and Joseph Augustine kept things scoreless in the seventh and eighth. Then, Aidan Dolinksy came in and earned the save after allowing one baserunner in a scoreless ninth.

Alex VanLandingham had the only multi-hit game for either team, going 2-for-4 with a run scored and a double.

Game 2: NYU 9, UMSV 1 (7 Innings)

The Violets notched three runs apiece in the first and second innings, featuring RBIs from Argenziano, Cam Dunn, Richard Beggy (two) and Dakota Barbet for a 6-0 lead.

A scoreless third inning was followed by the Dolphins plating their lone run of the game in the top of the fourth. But, RBIs from VanLandingham, Nate Pallotta and Joe Cetale gave the Violets three more runs in the bottom half to put the game away.

The final three frames were scoreless as NYU cruised to its ninth win of the young season.

Paul Guerne picked up the pitching win in this one, going 4.2 innings and allowing just one hit, one run and three walks while fanning six.

Jack Wilkin, Miles Kessler and Dylan Branca all had scoreless appearances in relief.

Cetale finished 3-for-3 at the plate while Argenziano, Dunn, Pallotta and Harrison Blueweiss had two hits apiece.

Next up for NYU is its Spring Break trip to Florida, which begins with a doubleheader against Illinois Tech on Saturday, March 16, in Bradenton.
