The New York University softball team faced Washington College for a twinbill on Thursday, March 21, in Chestertown, MD.
The Violets (5-7) dropped the opener 2-1 in nine innings but came back to beat Washington (9-20-1) by a score of 6-4 in the nitecap.
In the first game, neither team was able to score a run over the regulation seven innings. Then, in the top of the eighth, the Violets broke through on a sacrifice fly from
Margaux Lesser.
However, in the bottom of the frame, the Shorewomen plated the equalizer on a two-out single.
After NYU failed to score in the top of the ninth, Washington was able to pull out the victory on a walk-off one-out single.
Karleigh Kluever was the Violets' hard-luck loser, going the distance and not allowing an earned run. She gave up six hits and did not walk a batter while striking out five.
Lesser, Lindsay Baron and
Nicole Cicchetti had NYU's only hits.
The Violets rebounded in the second game, scoring two runs in the first inning and holding on for the win.
Chloe Stone and
Madi Hand each had home runs to put NYU ahead 3-0 after four innings.
The Shorewomen cut their deficit in half with two runs in the fifth, but a three-run outburst from the Violets in the sixth gave them some breathing room.
Victoria Negron and
Caroline Hofmann each had RBI's in the frame.
Washington scored two in the bottom of the seventh, but Kluever came in and got the final out for her first save of the season.
Starter
Marina Egbert got the win, going six innings and allowing two earned runs.
The Violets are back in action again tomorrow when they play a doubleheader against Christopher Newport University in Newport Beach, VA. First pitch is set for 3:00pm.
