The New York University men's tennis team notched its first win of the season, defeating RIT 9-0, on Saturday, March 2, at the Stadium Tennis Center in the Bronx, NY.
The Violets swept through the doubles round; the No. 1 team of Boren Zheng and Alexander Lee won their match 8-6, Louis Frowein and Jingyuan Chen dominated the #2 match 8-1, and Cooper Smith and Zachary Freier cemented the sweep with an 8-5 triumph over their #3 opponents.
Zheng and Chen continued their winning ways in singles play. Zheng breezed past the #1 match-up 6-2, 6-0, as did Chen at #2 with a 6-3, 6-1 victory.
Frowein controlled most of his #3 contest, 6-0, 6-1, and Freier posted a similar 6-0, 6-1 win at #5. Rumaish Khastgir (#4) and Ryan Shayani (#6) also came out on top in their singles matches, 6-4, 6-3, and 6-2, 6-4 respectively.
"I think our team played well overall. The doubles matches set the tone for the rest of the games," said Head Coach Horace Choy. "I have a lot of confidence in our players. As long as they compete and improve from how they played today, I'll be happy with the results."
The Violets will return to the court tomorrow against Queens College at the Stadium Tennis Center, Bronx, NY.
