New York University's softball team won both ends of its doubleheader against Gallaudet University on Tuesday, March 19, in Washington, DC.
The Violets took the opener 6-2 and scored a season-high 12 runs in their 12-4 victory in game two.
Game 1: NYU 6, Gallaudet 2 (7 Innings)
The Violets opened the scoring on an RBI groundout from
Alyssa Quary in the top of the first and the 1-0 lead held after two innings. NYU then doubled its advantage with a lone run in the top of the third, this time via a sac fly off the bat of
Lindsey Baron.
A scoreless fourth followed, but the Bison plated a pair in the bottom of the fifth to even the score 2-2. However, the Violets responded with four runs in the top of the sixth to regain the lead for good as
Claire Carson drove in a run,
Margaux Lesser scored on a wild pitch, Quary notched another RBI and
Emily Barbire capped it off with an RBI double.
Lesser, Carson, Quary and
Emma Aridi recorded two hits apiece.
Karleigh Kluever spun a complete game in the circle for NYU, allowing two runs on three hits and a walk with nine strikeouts in seven innings.
Game 2: NYU 12, Gallaudet 4 (6 Innings)
NYU again took the lead in the top of the first, with one run coming across on a Bison error and another after
Chloe Stone's RBI single.
Gallaudet got one back in the bottom half, but the Violets extended their advantage with four more in the second.
Nicole Cicchetti got it started with an RBI single, followed by another one from Lesser, before a wild pitch and then a double from Baron completed the scoring output.
Madi Hand launched a solo homer to left in the third and Stone doubled in a run in the fourth as NYU boasted an 8-1 lead after four full.
Neither side scored in the fifth, then another Baron RBI double highlighted a four-run sixth for the Violets which essentially put the game away.
Gallaudet rallied for three runs in the bottom of the sixth, but it wasn't enough as NYU grabbed its fourth win of the year.
Stone and Baron (two doubles and a triple) both went 3-for-4 while Lesser, Carson and Hand notched two hits each.
Jessie Werthman got the pitching win, going 5.2 innings while allowing four runs (three earned) on just one hit and four walks with six strikeouts.
Monique Kamrowski came in for the last batter and got the final out of the contest.
Next up for NYU is another doubleheader, this time at Washington College (MD) on Thursday, March 21, in Chestertown, MD.
