The New York University men's and women's fencing teams competed at the NCAA Northeast Regional Championships on Sunday, March 10, at Long Island University in Brooklyn, NY.
Fencers from all three NCAA Divisions participated with hopes of solidifying qualification for the NCAA National Championships later this month. Qualification is based 60 percent on a fencer's performance at the regionals, with the entire season counting for the other 40 percent.
Several Violets staked their claim on Sunday.
"
Jerry Pan,
Adam Wong and
Farr Dickson will all qualify, while
Kevin Zu is a potential at-large selection," explained Head Coach
Ben Bratton.
Both Wong (foil) and Pan (Saber) produced 10th-place finishes in their respective weapons. Dickson placed 12th in foil, while Zu was also 12th in saber.
"Adam deserves a lot of credit. It's not easy for a first-year fencer to qualify for Nationals," Bratton said. "This will be the second consecutive year that Farr will qualify, and that's something to be proud of."
On the women's side, another freshman,
Lily Papadakis was NYU's top performer, finishing 14th in epee.
"Another first-year who did pretty well throughout the season," Bratton added. "She's a real competitor, and even though she won't make it to Nationals this year, her outlook for the future is really good."
The official announcement of qualifiers will be made by the NCAA on Tuesday.
The NCAA National Championships begin on Thursday, March 21, at The Ohio State University in Columbus, OH.
