New York University's
15th-ranked wrestling team defeated Bridgewater State University, 58-0, and fell to eighth-ranked United States Coast Guard Academy, 30-10, on Saturday at the John A. Paulson Center in Manhattan. It was also Senior Day for NYU, honoring graduating wrestlers
Anthony Asatrian,
Anthony Chavez and
Hassan Khan.
The Violets began against Bridgewater State with back-to-back technical falls, courtesy of
Thomas Fischer (125) and
Jacob Venezia (133).
Danny Lightfoot followed with a pin at 141 in 1:05 against Alex Guaman Castro.
Senior Day honoree Chavez was up next at 149 and also notched a pin (1:31) over Colin Hassett. BSU forfeited 157 and 165, then NYU's
Mark Dickey pinned his 174-pound opponent in 1:14.
Trent Furman (184, 3:45), Asatrian (197, 0:52) and
Luke DuPont (285, 2:45) all recorded pins as NYU dominated its opening match of the day.
Coast Guard proved to be a challenge, leading 7-0 after the first two bouts. But, NYU's
Nick Kruczynski got the hosts on the board with a 4-1 decision at 141.
USCGA picked up a tech fall at 149, but it was a hard-fought matchup that went seven minutes. Then,
Cooper Pontelandolfo, ranked second in the nation at 157, earned a 13-7 decision to double the Violets' score.
However, Coast Guard finished strong as Furman, ranked 13th in the country at 184, was NYU's only other winner with an 11-2 major decision against Kenneth Marra.
NYU is now 10-2 in dual matches this season, continuing the campaign next Saturday, February 10, at home against 10th-ranked Stevens Institute of Technology.
