The New York University baseball team took both games from Sage College in the Violets' season-opening doubleheader on Saturday afternoon, February 25, in Kings Point, NY.
NYU won the first game, a seven-inning affair, 18-2, as well as the nitecap 10-3 over nine innings. The Violets amassed 25 hits across the two games, and the pitching staff finished with 17 strikeouts.
Game 1: NYU 18, Sage 2 (7 Innings)
Nick Argenziano,
Richard Beggy and
Harrison Blueweiss scored in the bottom of the first to get NYU on the board early. It was in the second when the Violets scored 10 runs.
Nate Pallotta hit a grand slam to start NYU's rally. Six more runs came in after a few more walks and singles.
In the bottom of the fourth, NYU took an 18-0 lead after
Max Oliveira doubled, sending
Alex VanLandingham and Beggy home.
NYU's starter,
Sean Bolin, was on the mound for five innings and recorded seven strikeouts.
Blueweiss went 4-for-5, scored three runs and had three RBIs. Pallotta went 2-for-4 with six RBIs. Oliveria had three hits, just as many RBIs, and a double.
Game 2: NYU 10, Wells 3 (9 Innings)
NYU continued its dominance in the second game of the twin bill. The Violets started their scoring in the bottom of the third inning when, with the bases loaded,
Cam Dunn hit into a fielder's choice that gave NYU a 1-0 edge.
NYU did most of its damage in the sixth, scoring eight runs. Sage's pitchers walked four batters; Pallotta, Beggy,
Joe Cetale,
Dakota Barbet, and Argenziano all had RBIs while NYU went around the horn, ending the sixth up 9-2.
The Violets added one more run in the eighth after a Beggy triple drove in Argenziano. NYU's starting pitcher,
Mason Morello, had nine strikeouts over 6.1 innings.
Aidan Dolinsky tossed a scoreless inning of relief while Cetale closed it for an eventual 10-3 win.
Beggy went 3-for-5 with four RBIs and a triple. Argenziano had two hits, two runs, and two RBIs. Dunn scored two runs, as well.
"Opening Day is always exciting," said Head Coach
Doug Kimbler. "We got some great pitching, timely defense, and two-out hits. That formula was proven with two wins today."
NYU will have another doubleheader against host United States Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point, NY, on Sunday, February 25, at noon.
