New York University's baseball team won both ends of a doubleheader against the United States Merchant Marine Academy on Sunday, February 25, in Kings Point, NY.
The Violets won game one 8-6 and ran away with game two 24-2 as they improved to 4-0 on the young season.
NYU jumped out to a 6-0 lead after five innings, including a solo homer from
Nick Argenziano and a two-run single off the bat of
Richard Beggy. It was 8-1 after six-and-a-half innings, with
Joe Cetale and
Max Oliveira producing additional RBIs.
But, the Mariners rallied in their final at-bats of the seven-inning affair, scoring five runs in the bottom of the seventh. However, Cetale stepped on the mound and fanned the lone batter he faced to stop the rally and pick up the save.
Andrew Reid was the winning pitcher, tossing five innings with five strikeouts while giving up just two hits and one run.
NYU's bats were on fire in game two, posting 12 runs in the second inning alone.
Nate Pallotta (six RBIs, HR) and
Cam Dunn (two 2Bs) had four hits apiece, Argenziano and
Dakota Barbet both went deep and
Paul Guerne got the win on the mound after throwing four innings and striking out seven.
Dylan Branca (two Ks),
Tyler Tedeschi (two Ks) and
Jack Wilkin (three Ks) each pitched a shutout inning in relief.
Next up for the Violets in a home game against Vassar College on Friday, March 1, at the Staten Island University Hospital Community Park at 3:00pm.
