Men’s Basketball Bounces Back

Violets Move to 9-4 in UAA

The 12th-ranked New York University men's basketball team traveled to Chicago, IL, on Sunday, February 18, where they defeated the University of Chicago in a University Athletic Association (UAA) clash. NYU bounced back from back-to-back losses and overcame the Maroons 73-61.

The Violets came out of the gates hot, going on an immediate 12-0 run which was capped off by a pair of free throws from Michael Savarino. NYU kept this momentum in the first as a Quinn Clark layup at 11:38 gave the Violets an 18-point edge, the largest of the half.

However, the Maroons didn't not going away as Alexander Battist's second-chance bucket later shortened NYU's lead to eight. The Violets recovered their footing and ended the first half ahead 38-25.

NYU started the second half like the first with an early 7-0 run. At the 8:25 mark, Konrad Kiszka gave the Violets their largest lead of the game, making it 59-35.

The Maroons found a second wind as the game began to wind down. Chicago cut the NYU lead to 11 after Thomas Kuroski knocked down a triple, but the Violets never let them closer than that.

With 30 seconds left, Spencer Freedman connected on two free throws to solidify NYU's victory.

The Violets did not trail the entire game. They shot 49.6 percent from the field and 38.1 percent from three. They also grabbed 40 rebounds, dished out 14 assists, and scored 40 points in the paint, 22 more than the Maroons.

Freedman finished with 19 points, eight boards, six assists, three steals, and 3-for-6 from distance. Quinn Clark had 10 points and six rebounds off the bench. Zay Freeney contributed 11 points and two blocks. Savarino pulled down five rebounds and scored 10.

The Violets and Case Western Reserve University are currently tied for first place in the UAA with 9-4 league records going into the final game of the regular season.

NYU will play its final regular season game and look to clinch at least a share of the Association title on Saturday, February 24, at 3:00pm in Waltham, MA, against Brandeis University.
