History was made by New York University's
14th-ranked men's basketball team as the Violets achieved their first University Athletic Association (UAA) title in 30 years with their 74-68 victory at Brandeis University on Saturday in Waltham, MA.
"I genuinely can't believe it," said Head Coach
Dave Klatsky. "Just so proud of these guys. It's been an amazing journey with this group and to cap the regular season off with a championship is so rewarding."
NYU's last UAA men's basketball title came in 1993-94; this year also marks the first time ever that both NYU men's and women's basketball have been crowned UAA champions in the same season.
The title is a culmination of the swift turnaround for the program under Klatsky, who is in his second season and steered the Violets back to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in seven years last campaign. NYU finished the 2023-24 regular season with a 20-5 record and 10-4 mark in the Association.
"We talk about how hard it is to win any league game all the time and that was evident again today," Klatsky added. "Brandeis showed incredible fight to come back and that's testament to their staff and program. That clock seemed to be moving awfully slowly in the second half, but thankfully we were able to hold them off and get the win."
Brandeis scored the first four points of the game, but NYU responded with a 15-3 run to go ahead 15-7 with 10:21 left in the first half. The Violets kept rolling, ballooning their advantage to 21 points (45-24) at the break after
Hampton Sanders' layup beat the buzzer.
NYU remained on top by double-digits for the first 11 minutes of the second half, but Brandeis came back within nine (57-48) with 9:00 on the clock. The Judges came within four points four different times over the final nine minutes of play, but NYU never let them closer than that to cap off an outstanding regular season.
Michael Savarino notched a game-high 21 points, all coming from downtown (7-of-12 3PT), with 10 boards for a double-double.
Quinn Clark also had a double-double, finishing with 13 points, 13 rebounds, four assists, a steal and a block.
Zay Freeney added 19 points, six boards, three assists and two steals.
NYU now turns its attention to the NCAA Tournament Selection Show on Monday, February 26, at 1:00pm on NCAA.com.
