The New York University men's basketball team captured the NYU Holiday Tournament Championship with an 81-62 win over Williams College on Monday, December 30, at the John A. Paulson Center in Manhattan.
The
#8-ranked Violets lifted their season record to a perfect 10-0 with the victory.
NYU fell behind early, as Williams went out to a 6-2 lead.
However, the Violets scored the next nine points and never trailed again.
Ahead by just one point, 11-10, the hosts went on a 32-14 run to take a 19-point lead en route to a 45-27 halftime advantage.
Tristan How registered a double-double in the first half, compiling 19 points and 10 rebounds, while
Zay Freeney also reached double figures with 10 points.
The Ephs (7-3) connected on the first bucket of the second half, but never got any closer as the Violets went up by as many as 31.
"Really proud of this group," said Head Coach
Dave Klatsky. "They're playing unselfish basketball. They came to play today. Our guys stepped up and really paid attention to detail."
How tied his career high with 26 points and set a new standard with 15 rebounds.
"Williams is a top-notch program. They're super good," How said. "This was a good test to see where we are. We did what we were supposed to do today. A great team effort."
Freeney finished with 13 points and five rebounds, while
Hampton Sanders scored 15.
Josh Menard dished out a team-high three assists.
The Violets return to action in the new year on Saturday, January 4, when they host Drew University at the Paulson Center. Tip-off is set for 2:00pm.
