The 16-9 New York University women's volleyball team swept Grinnell College in straight sets on Wednesday night, October 23, in the John A. Paulson Center.
"I thought our team did a really good job taking care of business midweek during midterms," said Head Coach Andrew Brown. "They came out and played really efficient volleyball to keep things to three sets. We were really good at first contact, served tough, passed well, and had a good defense."
The Violets made quick work of the first set, racing to a 9-3 lead that featured six consecutive NYU points. Grinnell pulled within three points after, but the Violets extended their lead to seven with a 6-1 run. Another four-point streak put the Violets up 19-8, and they closed the first set out with a Grace Nelson kill to win 25-13.
The Pioneers were more competitive in the second frame, taking an 8-6 lead early. However, four straight Violet points forced the Grinnell coach to take a timeout with the score 10-8 NYU. The Violets extended their lead to seven with a run featuring multiple NYU side-outs, forcing another Grinnell timeout.
The Pioneers came within five points of tying the frame at 23-18, but a Jessica Spierenberg kill and a Pioneers' attack error ended the frame in favor of the Violets, 25-19.
Grinnell fell behind 3-0 early in the third set, but tied it up with three consecutive points. The Pioneers led again at 6-5, but two kills from Taylor Odum and one from Chloe Hynes put NYU up 8-6. The Violets then forced a Grinnell timeout with a 4-2 run.
Grinnell scored one more, but a four-point Violets' run highlighted by two Chloe Lemons kills forced another timeout at 16-9. The Violets scored four in a row with kills from Sarah Lattan, Odum, and two by Hynes and went on to win the set 25-16.
Lattan, Odum and Hynes led the Violets in kills with seven, while Dominique Drust recorded 16 assists and Ava Launsbach added 14. Libero Yooni Park had another solid defensive performance, putting up 20 digs.
"This will give us confidence going into this last round where we know the level of UAA play is going to be intense," continued Brown. "But, we are excited to be on the road and close out our UAA season."
NYU travels to Pittsburgh, PA, to play in the UAA Round Robin #3 on Sunday against the University of Rochester at 10:00am and Emory University at 2:00pm.
