Jingyuan Chen and
Rumaish Khastgir of the New York University men's tennis team posted victories on Saturday at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Regional Championship in Madison, NJ, to claim their spots in the third day of action.
Chen won his Round of 16 match-up 6-3, 6-0 against Kai Yuminaga of the University of Rochester. He will face Sean Pesin of Hobart College in the quarterfinals on Sunday.
Khastgir triumphed 6-2, 7-5 over Rochester Polytechnic Institute's Bryce Burnham. He will play Matt Michibata of The College of New Jersey in his quarterfinal round.
Boren Zheng also competed in the singles on Saturday, retiring due to injury after a 6-7 (4), 0-3 loss to Ben Almquist of Vassar College.
Zheng and
Alexander Lee represented the Violets in doubles play. Their ITA journey ended in the quarterfinals after they fell 8-7 (4) to their TCNJ opponents.
"We had a good result getting two players into the quarterfinals," said Head Coach
Horace Choy. "The day was tempered by Boren's injury but Rumaish and Jingyuan are playing very well. Rumaish pulled out a close match against RPI and Jingyuan was dominant against Rochester. Matches will get tougher tomorrow but I know our guys will compete and do their best."
Sunday will feature the quarterfinal and semifinal rounds of the championship. Action begins at 9:00 am.
