Marina Egbert dazzled with a complete-game no-hitter in game one as New York University's softball team swept a doubleheader against Hunter College on Saturday evening at the College of Staten Island to conclude the 2023 season.
Egbert struck out six while her own error in the first was all that prevented her from completing a perfect game as the Violets won 2-0 before rolling to a 12-0 victory in five innings in game two.
"All the hard work she put in this season, it showed towards the end of the year," head coach
Now-Allah James said of Egbert. "She threw her pitches, hit her spots, did everything she's supposed to do and I'm proud of her. I'm proud of the work she's done, proud of the work the whole team has put in this year."
The Violets' offense did just enough to support Egbert's masterpiece in game one, as
Samantha Burggraf's RBI single to bring in
Margaux Lesser in the bottom of the first was all the scoring that was needed. But, NYU pushed across an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth on an RBI single off the bat of
Chloe Blanc to remove any doubt.
NYU compiled 10 hits in the opener as Burggraf, Egbert and
Madi Hand all went 2-for-3 at the plate with Hand's double in the sixth being the lone extra-base hit of the contest.
The hits turned into plenty of runs in game two as the Violets scored three in the first on
Lily Candelaria's bases-clearing double with two outs. Six more runs came across in the second, highlighted by Hand's grand slam over the left-field fence for her team-leading third home run of the season.
NYU added three more runs in the bottom of the fourth without recording a hit as the Hawks' pitchers surrendered four walks and hit a batter in addition to a Hunter fielding error.
Lesser finished 2-for-2 with two runs and an RBI while Burggraf scored three times and Hand and Candelaria drove in four runs apiece.
Angelina Biele earned the game-two pitching win after tossing 4.2 shutout innings and allowing four walks and two hits with seven strikeouts.
Emily Stone entered the circle in relief and ended the game with a strikeout.
"You can't win ballgames without everyone on a team," James added. "Every single person on the roster is an important piece and I just hope they know that we love each and every one of them."
The pair of victories brought NYU's record to 19-19 for the 2023 season.
