Baseball Concedes Series Opener to WashU

NYU falls 4-2 in first of four against the Bears this weekend

Ashwin Chona limited Washington University in St. Louis to one run over seven strong innings on the mound but New York University's baseball team lost 4-2 to the Bears in the first of four University Athletic Association (UAA) contests this weekend at SIUH Community Park in Staten Island, NY.

Chona struck out seven while allowing five hits and two walks in his seven innings of work, but the Bears plated three runs in the last two frames to claim victory. NYU fell to 11-9 and 4-4 in the UAA with the defeat.

Ryan Carr, Cam Dunn and Richard Beggy had two hits apiece for the Violets with Beggy and Carr each doubling for NYU's two extra-base hits on the day.

Carr led off for the Violets and singled through the right side to open the bottom of the first before stealing second and advancing to the third on a groundout to the first basemen. Dunn then drove him in with a single down the right field line that WashU's first baseman knocked down with a dive but couldn't beat Dunn to the bag.

The Bears answered with a run in the top of the second but the next four frames were scoreless as Chona and WashU starter Will Henkel settled into a pitcher's duel.

NYU broke the scoring drought in the bottom of the seventh when Carr doubled over the left fielder to bring in Max Oliveira, who singled to open the inning, for a 2-1 lead entering the eighth.

WashU responded with a pair of runs in the top of the eighth on an RBI single and balk with a runner on third. The Bears added an insurance run in the top of the ninth on a well-executed sacrifice squeeze while NYU's offense stalled in the last two innings.

The teams continue the series with a doubleheader tomorrow on Staten Island with game one beginning at 12:00 p.m.
