New York University's baseball team dropped a pair of University Athletic Association (UAA) contests to WashU on Saturday at SIUH Community Park in Staten Island, NY.
The Violets lost the opener 9-3 and fell 8-2 in game two.
WashU led 3-0 after five-and-a-half innings in the first game of the day, but NYU came back to score three runs in the bottom of the sixth on a WashU error and RBI singles from
Max Oliveira and
Russell Burton.
But, the Bears plated six across the final three frames while holding NYU scoreless to come out on top. Burton,
Nate Pallotta and
Richard Beggy had two hits apiece in the defeat.
In game two, the Violets got on the board first after Burton's sac fly in the bottom of the second. NYU was held scoreless for the next four innings while the Bears pushed three runs across during that span.
Another sac fly, this time off the bat of
Alex VanLandingham, brought NYU within one (3-2) in the bottom of the seventh, but WashU added five runs in the top of the ninth to secure the sweep.
Violet starter
John Gassler had a good outing on the bump, going seven full innings and allowing three runs on seven hits and three walks while striking out nine.
Beggy, Pallotta and
Nick Argenziano notched two hits each as the Violets compiled 11 hits in the game despite the loss.
The teams conclude the UAA series with a single contest tomorrow, April 9, back on Staten Island for an 11:00 am first pitch.
