Baseball Scores 30 Runs in Split with Brandeis

Violets win game two 21-0 in seven innings

New York University's baseball team scored 21 unanswered runs in game two to split a University Athletic Association (UAA) doubleheader with Brandeis University on Sunday at Maimonides Park in Brooklyn, NY.

The Violets dropped a high-scoring game one, 11-9, totaling a whopping 30 runs on the day after their decisive 21-0 victory in a seven-inning game two. NYU swept the first doubleheader of the four-game series on Friday to come away with three wins on the weekend.

NYU now holds an 11-8 record and 4-3 mark against UAA opponents this year.

"Our guys came out fired up...we got a couple of runs in the bottom of the first and once we jumped out to a lead we knew John Gassler was going to hold it down on the pitching side of things," said assistant coach Tommy Cardona of the 21-0 victory. "The boys kept piling on the hits and we had a great day at the plate."

The Violets notched 14 hits, drew nine walks and had three batters reach via hit-by-pitch to account for their offensive outburst. Gassler, NYU's starting pitcher, picked up his third win of the season after tossing six shutout innings while allowing five hits and four walks with eight strikeouts.

NYU opened the scoring in game two with three runs in the bottom of the first, highlighted by a two-run triple off the bat of Richard Beggy, before tacking on lone runs in each of the next three frames.

Then, a seven-run bottom of the fifth broke the game open which featured three runs coming in after a batter was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and a two-run single from Ryan Carr.

The runs kept coming in NYU's half of the sixth with the Violets plating eight more as Alex VanLandingham had both an RBI double and RBI single in the inning.

Aidan Dolinsky pitched a scoreless seventh to wrap things up on the mound for NYU, allowing a hit and a walk while fanning a pair.

VanLandingham finished 3-for-3 with three runs scored, three RBIs, a double and a stolen base.

Carr also had three hits, going 3-for-4 with two runs, two RBIs and a triple. Russell Burton also drove in three runs while 10 different Violets recorded a hit in the win.

In today's opener, NYU fell behind 7-1 after four innings but clawed back, scoring eight runs over the final five frames including a two-run homer from Nick Argenziano. But, Brandeis tacked on four more during that span to come away with a narrow, two-run win.

"We have another tough opponent in WashU (next weekend), the UAA is always tough," Cardona added. "WashU is going to be another competitive series as well, luckily we're playing them here at home so we're hoping that we can have similar results...the pitching's got to be a little better than it was this weekend but as long as we continue to hit and barrel baseballs I think we're going to put ourselves in a good position to win ballgames."

The four-game series against WashU begins Friday, April 7, with a single game at the Violets' other home field of SIUH Community Park in Staten Island, NY.
