Softball Drops Pair

Violets Defeated at Stevens 4-1 and 4-3

The New York University softball team dropped both ends of its doubleheader at Stevens Institute of Technology on Sunday, March 5, in Hoboken, NJ.

The Violets, now 1-3 on the young season, were beaten 4-1 in the opener and then fell short in the nitecap 4-3.

In the first game, there was no scoring until Madi Hand's sacrifice fly gave NYU a 1-0 lead in the top of the sixth inning.

However, the lead was short-lived as the Ducks plated four in the bottom of the frame to secure the victory.

Marina Egbert went the distance for the Violets, striking out two and allowing those four earned runs. The offense was stifled as Stevens' Erin Kreis and Ashley Allen allowed only four NYU hits. Egbert ( a double) and Hand each had one hit, while Chloe Blanc went 2-for-3.

The NYU offense was better in game two. A three-run uprising in the top of the first was a result of Emma Aridi's single and a two-run double from Hannah Becker.

But, that was all the runs that NYU could muster. Stevens scored single runs in the third, fifth and sixth innings, then received a walk-off RBI single from Olivia Warner in the seventh to complete the sweep.

Angelina Biele started in the circle for the Violets and went the first six innings. Sophia Skerik came on to pitch the seventh and allowed the winning run.

Egbert DH'd in game two and had two hits, as did right fielder Olivia de Hesselle

The Violets return to action down in Florida when they compete at the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic beginning on Monday, March 13. The games will take place in both Fort Meyers and Naples.
