The New York University baseball team dropped its first games of the 2023 season, falling to McDaniel College 4-1 and 12-11 on Sunday, March 5, in Westminster, MD.
NYU had swept McDaniel on Saturday to improve to 4-0 before suffering their first setbacks of the season.
McDaniel scored first in the opener, plating three runs in the bottom of the second inning.
The Violets cut into their deficit on
Kosta Mocklis' RBI double in the fifth.
However, the Green Terror scored a run in the bottom of the frame to close out the scoring.
Ashwin Chona started for NYU and allowed all four runs on six hits and four walks over five innings. He also struck six and hit a batter while suffering his first loss of the season.
Joseph Argenziano pitched a scoreless sixth for the Violets.
Mocklis had two hits in the game, with
Connor Roggero,
Nate Pallotta and
Alex VanLandingham also recording a hit.
The second game turned into an offensive battle right from the start as McDaniel scored five runs in the bottom of the first inning off NYU starter
Andrew Reid.
The Violets battled back with two runs in the second and fourth.
The Green Terror plated one more in the botom of the fourth, but NYU took the lead with three runs in the top of the sixth. Roggero scored on an error,
Richard Beggy's base-loaded walk forced in the second run and Pallotta's RBI single scored the go-ahead run scored.
The Violets again fell behind when McDaniel scored two in the bottom of the frame.
Vanlandingham's double tied the game in the top of the eighth, but McDaniel again quickly responded with two in the bottom of the inning.
NYU trailed 10-8 heading into the ninth, but the offense did not rest. Beggy's RBI single,
Max Oliveira's RBI on a fielder's choice and a Green Wave error returned the lead to the Violets.
However, a bases-loaded hit by pitch and a sacrifice fly resulted in a walk-off win for the home team.
Nick Argenziano had four hits for NYU in the nitecap, while Beggy, Pallotta, Oliveira,
Russell Burton, and
Ryan Carr each had two.
The Violets return to the field in Bradenton, FL, on Saturday, March 11, when they face Illinois Institute of Technology for a doubleheader beginning at 11:00am.
