New York University's baseball team dropped both ends of a University Athletic Association (UAA) doubleheader at Emory University in Atlanta, GA, on Saturday.
The Eagles won game one 11-6 and took the second 15-4 after NYU picked up a 4-3 victory Friday in the series opener. The Violets fell to 8-7 on the season and 1-2 in UAA play after the pair of defeats.
NYU's game-one starter
John Gassler held Emory scoreless for the first four frames, finishing his day with 4.1 innings pitched, two runs allowed on three hits and two walks and seven strikeouts.
The Eagles plated two in the bottom of the fifth to open the scoring before adding four more in the sixth to make it 6-0 entering the late innings. NYU made up some ground in the seventh after
Joe Cetale's two-run single with the bases loaded.
Emory pushed across two more in the bottom of the seventh, but
Richard Beggy launched a three-run homer in the top of the eighth to bring the Violets within three (8-5). The hosts' bats didn't slow down though, scoring three in the bottom half.
Nick Argenziano delivered an RBI single in the top of the ninth for NYU's final run of the game.
Beggy finished 2-for-4 with two runs scored, three RBIs and his first home run of the year.
Dakota Barbet went 2-for-3 with a double and run scored.
Tyler Offman had a scoreless outing of relief, tossing one full inning without allowing a baserunner.
The teams played a seven-inning affair in game two, with Emory scoring first with three tallies in the bottom of the second.
Cam Dunn's RBI single gave NYU its first run of the contest in the top of the third, but Emory plated seven in the fourth to take control.
Argenziano,
Mike Montenegro and
Nate Pallotta each had an RBI for NYU to account for the rest of the Violets' offense.
Argenziano and
Russell Burton had two hits apiece while
Alex VanLandingham hit a double for NYU's lone extra-base hit.
The four-game UAA series concludes tomorrow with a 1:00 p.m. contest in Atlanta.
