New York University's baseball team came back to defeat Emory University, 4-3, in its University Athletic Association (UAA) opener on Friday in Atlanta, GA.
Kosta Mocklis' two-run single in the top of the fifth proved to be the difference as the Violets improved to 8-5 and 1-0 in Association play on the young season.
Ashwin Chona (2-1) earned the win on the mound for NYU, going five full innings while allowing three runs on seven hits and four walks while striking out three.
Emory opened the scoring with a lone run in the bottom of the second, but the Violets answered with a pair of runs in the top of the fourth on a sac fly from
Alex VanLandingham and RBI groundout off the bat of
Russell Burton.
A pair of solo homers in the bottom of the fourth put the Eagles back ahead, 3-2, but Mocklis delivered a one-out, two-run base hit to right center in the following frame for the final scoring play of the afternoon to secure the win for NYU.
Richard Beggy had a great day at the plate for the Violets, going 3-for-5 with two runs scored.
Cam Dunn and
Nate Pallotta both went 2-for-5 while
Nick Argenziano was 1-for-4 with a double for NYU's lone extra-base hit of the contest.
Sean Bolin earned the save after tossing four scoreless innings of relief while allowing four hits, walking one and striking out three.
The teams continue their four-game weekend series with a doubleheader tomorrow, March 25, with first pitch of game on scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
