Darren Yen placed third in the men's saber on Sunday after the New York University
ninth-ranked men's and
21st-ranked women's fencing teams competed at the NCAA Northeast Regional Championships in Cambridge, MA.
Hosted by
first-ranked Harvard University, 269 competitors represented 19 schools to vie for NCAA National Championships qualifications.
Yen (saber),
Brian Kim (saber),
Ian Adler (épée), and
Farr Dickson (foil) all scored in the top 11 in their respective events, unofficially qualifying for Nationals. The officially selected athletes will be announced on Tuesday, March 14, in a press release on NCAA.com.
"I'm really proud of the entire fencing team for their performance throughout the season and particularly at the NCAA Northeast Regional Qualifier," Head Coach
Ben Bratton said. "The Northeast Region is by far one of the most challenging in the country."
Saber competitor Yen entered the competition seeded 13th to bypass the first round of elimination. After posting an 8-4 record over the next two rounds, he picked up seven match victories in the Round of 12 to finish third.
Teammate Kim was seeded 14th behind Yen to enter the Regional Championship, also bypassing the first round. Like Yen, Kim advanced to the Round of 12 with an 8-4 record. He added six victories in the final pool to finish fifth overall with 14 match wins on the day.
Jamie Ren finished 15th,
Kevin Zu was 16th, and
Faaris Hussain was 18th to round out the Violets' saber squad.
Adler placed 11th in the épée, improving from his 16th-seed entry. He tallied six match victories to move on to the Round of 12, where he posted two additional wins.
Tyler Cho was 23rd,
Michael Kang was 25th, and
Ethan Kim tied for 31st with #22 Brandeis University's Mark Shamis.
In the foil, Dickson tied for ninth with #4 Columbia University-Barnard College's Andrew Zheng. Originally seeded 13th, he posted 11 total victories, four of those in the Round of 12.
Andrew Sledeski placed 18th while
Bryce McClain was 35th.
On the women's side,
Anna Lanzman finished 12th in the épée to blow past her 24th-place seeding. She recorded 11 victories across the first three pools to advance to the Round of 12, where she added one win.
"Anna had an amazing individual performance," Bratton noted.
Sophia Dondisch finished 24th,
Zara Sinha was 30th, and
Ria Jobalia placed 33rd to complete the Violets' épée competition.
Polly Adler led the way for the foil team, placing 17th with seven victories for the day.
Maria Stamos finished 23rd and
Chiara Codazzi tied for 24th with Anna Szantay of Long Island University.
Renee Wu shared 30th place with Hannah Du of Brandeis while
Annika Santos was 45th.
In the saber,
Leanne Chan had the highest finish for the Violets at 34th.
Sharon Ni and Valery Krylova of Sacred Heart University tied for 41st while
Allison Dunlap placed 47th.
"We're excited to be getting ready now for NCAAs," Bratton said. "The National Championships is recognized as one of the most difficult tournaments in the world, but I know our athletes are up to the task."
The National Championships will take place from March 23-26 in Durham, NC, hosted by Duke University.
