Baseball Drops Rubber Match with Illinois Tech

Five Violets record multiple hits in defeat

New York University's baseball team fell 17-12 to the Illinois Institute of Technology on Sunday in the teams' third of three contests in Bradenton, FL over the weekend.

The high-scoring affair saw five Violets notch multiple hits, led by Cam Dunn who went 3-for-5 with three RBIs, three runs, a double and a stolen base. Nate Pallotta belted his third home run of the year, going deep for the second straight day, as part of a 2-for-3 line with four RBIs and two runs scored.

Richard Beggy (2-for-5), Max Oliveira (2-for-4) and Dakota Barbet (2-for-4) all doubled during their multi-hit outings.

The first inning was scoreless but NYU's bats got going with six runs over the next three frames. Oliveira's two run single and Barbet's RBI double gave the Violets three runs in the second before Pallotta hit his two-run shot in the third.

An RBI double from Beggy in the fourth put NYU up 6-0 before each team tacked on a run in the fifth. The game became a true slugfest in the late innings as Illinois Tech plated 11 runs across the seventh and eighth to take a 12-7 lead.

The Violets responded with five runs in the bottom of the eighth to keep the excitement going and tie the score 12-12, highlighted by Dunn's bases-clearing double for three RBIs.

A five-run top of the ninth for Illinois Tech proved to be the difference, however, as NYU went down in order in the bottom half.

Ashwin Chona pitched well as the Violets' starter, going 5.0 innings while allowing just one run on six hits and one walk with four strikeouts.

Every pitcher who appeared for either team gave up at least one run in this one, except for Pallotta who tossed the final two outs of the top of the ninth.

NYU continues its Spring Break trip with a pair of games on Friday, March 17, in Auburndale, FL. The Violets take on Western New England University at 9:30 a.m. before playing SUNY Brockport in the afternoon.
