The New York University women's tennis team won its 2023 spring opener, defeating Johns Hopkins University 5-4 on Sunday, February 26, at the Stadium Tennis Club in the Bronx, NY.
The Violets fell behind 2-1 in doubles play, but rebounded to win four of the six singles matches to win the day's competition.
"I'm very happy for the women," said Head Coach
Horace Choy. "They have worked hard leading up to this match, and playing Johns Hopkins (
ranked #25 by the ITA) was a challenging way to start the season."
The Violets' # 1 doubles team of
Ida Krause and
Dakota Fordham were the lone doubles winners for NYU (8-2). Each player also won her singles match. Krause was victorious at #1 (6-1, 6-1), while Fordham took the #2 match 6-3, 6-2.
NYU clinched the team victory with singles wins by
Jimena Menendez at #4 (7-5, 6-4) and
Molly Heber at #6 (6-4, 6-3).
"We had contributions from everyone and the team did a great job of supporting each other," Choy added. "We have a strong team and I like our chances against just about everyone."
The Violets return to action on Saturday, March 4, when they host Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) at 12:00pm back at the Stadium Tennis Club.
