Baseball Sweeps Season-Opening Doubleheader

Violets outscore Wells 18-0 on the day

John Gassler fanned 10 while allowing just one hit in game one and Nate Pallotta drove in four runs on the day as New York University's baseball team took both games from Wells College in the Violets' season-opening doubleheader on Sunday afternoon at Staten Island University Hospital Community Park.

NYU won game one, a seven-inning affair, 7-0, before an 11-0 win over nine innings in game two. The Violets amassed 17 hits across the two games, played errorless defense and the pitching staff finished with 17 strikeouts and just one walk on the day.

Game 1: NYU 7, Wells 0 (7 Innings)

Graduate student pitcher John Gassler, who led the University Athletic Association (UAA) in ERA last year, sat the Express down one-two-three in the top of the first before the Violets went ahead 1-0 in the bottom half on Ryan Carr's sacrifice fly to right.

Alex VanLandingham tripled home a run in the second to make it 2-0 NYU, followed by scoreless third and fourth innings. The Violets tacked on another run in the bottom of the fifth on a Connor Roggero RBI single and then plated four in the sixth, highlighted by a two-run home run well over the left field wall off the bat of Pallotta.

The Express mustered just one hit in the game as Gassler was masterful in his season debut, throwing 6.0 innings while allowing just one hit, one walk, no runs and striking out 10.

Ansel Balmer made his collegiate debut on the bump in the seventh, tossing a hitless, scoreless final frame.

Roggero hit 2-for-4 with a triple, an RBI and a run scored. Pallotta went 2-for-3 with two RBIs, two runs, a double and NYU's first homer of the season.

VanLandingham was the third and final Violet with multiple hits, going 2-for-3 with two runs, a triple, an RBI and a stolen base.

Game 2: NYU 11, Wells 0 (9 Innings)

With the sky clearing and the view of lower Manhattan shining in the distance, NYU's bats picked up right where they left off to begin game two of the twin bill. The Violets scored four runs in the bottom of the first as Cam Dunn launched a two-run double to right center before Richard Beggy roped a two-run single through the right side.

NYU then scored seven more in the bottom of the second as the Violets did all of their damage in the first two innings. Wells' starter walked four batters in the frame while VanLandingham, Nick Argenziano and Kosta Mocklis all had RBI singles and Pallotta stayed hot with a two-run double over the center fielder's head to break the game open.

The Violets' starting pitcher Tyler Judge shut the Express down over his five full innings of work, allowing just three hits and no runs while fanning two. Ashwin Chona tossed two scoreless innings of relief while Andrew Reid, Joseph Augustine, Aidan Dolinsky and Zachary Cetin all had scoreless appearances out of the bullpen.

Dunn went 2-for-3 with two runs, two RBIs and a double. Beggy finished with three RBIs and a stolen base while he, Roggero, Carr, Argenziano, Pallotta and Mocklis all scored at least once for the Violets.

Next up for NYU is the first of a four-game weekend set at McDaniel College in Westminster, MD, on Friday, March 3, at 12:00 p.m.
