Gautham Dasari posted a match-high 15 kills as New York University's
12th-ranked men's volleyball team swept sixth-ranked St. John Fisher College on Saturday afternoon at the Brooklyn Athletic Facility.
The victory pushed NYU to 9-4 on the season and 2-1 in United Volleyball Conference (UVC) play, slotting the team third in the league standings. It also snapped a three-game losing streak to SJFC in the all-time series dating back to March 2018.
The Violets won by set scores of 25-16, 27-25, 25-17, coming back to win the second for an impressive straight-set victory
"We really stuck to the game plan," said head coach
José Piña. "We really executed and did not deviate from it. Even in game two, when we were back by a lot of points late, we still stuck to our game plan and were able to pull out the win. By game three we knew that if we jumped ahead by a good amount of points that they were not going to put as much pressure on us."
The early stages of the first set were closely contested, but NYU pulled away late as a Dasari kill gave the hosts a 22-14 lead. Six blocks in the frame for the Violets, as opposed to none from Fisher, helped NYU to a comfortable victory.
The Cardinals rebounded well in the second, taking a 10-3 advantage after a Violet error. NYU chipped away though, outscoring SJFC 17-10 throughout the middle of the frame to tie things 20-20 late. The Violets reached set point multiple times as the two sides exchanged service errors until a Cardinal attack error completed the comeback for NYU.
Set three was essentially all NYU as Dasari and
Luke Boyer had five kills each in the stanza while the team totaled four blocks in limiting the Cardinals to .154 hitting. NYU hit .323 in the set for 15 kills to secure the sweep.
"We were just able to control them," Piña added. "They are a team that doesn't make many mistakes, so you have to dig them and convert on the digs. That was the key today. In essence we have set ourselves up to be in the UVC playoffs. This was a big victory."
Dasari added six digs, two assists and an ace to his 15 kills (.333), while Boyer finished with 11 kills (.375), six total blocks, three digs, and an ace.
Lucas Osiecki totaled eight kills (.278) and three digs.
Ryan Li notched a match-high 32 assists with seven block assists.
Buddy Cohen dominated at the net, delivering 11 blocks assists on the day.
Zach Knudsen anchored the defense, posting a match-high 15 digs.
NYU reverts back to non-conference play for its next match, taking on Penn State-Behrend on Sunday, March 5, at the Brooklyn Athletic Facility.
