The Violets raced out to an 8-0 lead and were never threatened as New York University went on to a 111-66 win over Brooklyn College on Saturday, December 9, at the John A. Paulson Center in Manhattan.
En route to the lopsided victory,
#8 NYU set a pair of program records. The Violets made 24 three-pointers, breaking the old mark of 22 set vs. York College on December 7, 2022. The squad also recorded 34 assists, exceeding by one the 33 that were accumulated against City Tech on on December 11, 2010.
The Violets connected on 52.2 percent (24-of-46) from long range in scoring a season-high point total.
Kawika Akina's trey with 2:06 left in the game was the long-distance record-breaker, while his assist on
Alan Mashensky's three with 1:35 remaining also established the new standard.
"It's always fun when you break records," said Head Coach
Dave Klatsky. "More importantly, the reason we broke them was because we were unselfish and we found guys that were open. And, if we shoot open threes, they have a good chance of going in."
Konrad Kiszka led the way with a career-high 17 points. He connected on 5-of-6 three pointers while adding three rebounds and an assist in only 16 minutes.
"We were out there having fun, playing as a team," Kiszka said. "The guys have really welcomed me and I feel like I really fit in with the team. I'm just trying to make as many threes as I can and help the team as best I can."
A trio of Violets finished with 15 points:
Spencer Freedman,
Michael Savarino and
Zay Freeney. Freedman, who dished out a game-high nine assists, scored all 15 points in the first 20 minutes as NYU (7-1) took a 59-31 halftime lead.
The Bulldogs (1-10) never got any closer in the second half, as the Violets stretched their lead to as many as 50 points (101-51).
Flynt Whitworth, playing in only his second collegiate game, also scored in double figures (10) as many of the reserves saw significant playing time.
"These types of games are really great for everyone because those guys at the end of the bench help us significantly during practice day in and day out," Klatsky explained. "For them to get a chance to get on the court is something that as a coach I love because they deserve their shot and they don't always get it."
The Violets return to action next Saturday, December 16, when they host Delaware Valley University back at the Paulson Center. Tip-off is set for 1:00pm.
