#9 Men's Hoops Triumphs Over Delaware Valley

Freeney's 22 Points Lead Violets at Home

Zay Freeney scored a game- and season-high 22 points to lead New York University's ninth-ranked men's basketball team in a 98-56 win over Delaware Valley University on Saturday at the John A. Paulson Center in Manhattan.

The Violets improved to 8-1 on the season and picked up their sixth straight victory. NYU led for all but three minutes of the contest as Freeney shot 9-of-14 from the field and 4-of-6 from distance along with a career-high six steals.

Spencer Freedman added 15 points, all coming from beyond the arc (5-of-7), while Michael Savarino was the third and final Violet in double figures with 11 points (4-of-8 FG, 3-of-5 3PT), three boards, three assists and two steals.

The lead changed eight times throughout the first 7:33 of the contest, but NYU ended the back-and-forth with 18 consecutive points for a 32-13 lead at the 5:20 mark.

Delaware Valley closed the gap a bit in the final minutes of the half, but Freedman hit a sidestep, buzzer-beating triple to give the Violets a 43-27 cushion at the break.

NYU hit 8-of-17 three-pointers in the first half while limiting the Aggies to 27.3 percent shooting. The Violets' momentum carried into the second half as they opened on an 11-2 run to claim a 58-29 advantage with 16 minutes to play.

Eleven different Violets ended up scoring in the second half as NYU secured its second consecutive win by more than 40 points.

Cinque Stephens finished with eight points, four assists and three boards, Hampton Sanders, Bryan Moussako and Konrad Kiszka chipped in seven points apiece, Quinn Clark corralled a game-high 10 rebounds, and Emmanuel Onuama posted six points, nine boards and four blocks.

The Violets will next host the NYU Holiday Tournament on Friday and Saturday, December 29 and 30, at the Paulson Center. The opening game will see NYU take on SUNY Canton at 5:00pm on December 29.
