The
eighth-ranked New York University men's basketball team concluded its four-game road swing with a 78-73 win over Connecticut College on Saturday, December 2, in New London, CT.
This contest saw 15 lead changes, but the Violets came out on top to improve their win streak to four and record to 6-1.
The game started out slower than usual with both teams scoreless in the first minute-and-a-half, but that changed when Ben Rice hit a three to give Connecticut the lead early. NYU's
Zay Freeney immediately responded with a three of his own, catapulting both teams to go point for point. Freeney once again gave the Violets momentum to take their first lead, 13-12, with a bucket at 13:00.
The first half was extremely close as both teams never led by more than four points and the lead changed eight times. The opening half ended with a
Quinn Clark layup (0:35) to send the teams into halftime tied 39-39.
As the second half began, neck-and-neck play continued. At 17:50,
Michael Savarino hit a three to tie the game for the third time (45-45). The Camels later produced a 5-0 run in a 1:10 span to give them their largest lead, 56-51.
After a
Cinque Stephens layup, NYU went on a 10-2 spurt and didn't trail for the remainder of the game. Cam Schainfeld brought the Camels within three with 5.4 seconds left. But, two clutch free throws from freshman
Hampton Sanders allowed NYU to ice the game and claim victory.
The Violets shot a season-high 59.6 percent from the field and 53.8 percent from three. They also grabbed 30 rebounds, 11 more than their opponents. NYU dished out 21 assists as a team, its second-most this season.
Graduate student guard
Spencer Freedman finished with 21 points, six assists, and went 4-for-5 from three. Sanders had 15 points off the bench while being perfect from the field, making all four shots and five free throws. Savarino contributed 12 points, five rebounds and five assists. Stephens also pulled down a season-high nine rebounds.
The Violets will return to the John A. Paulson Center for the first time after their long road stretch when they face Brooklyn College on Saturday, December 9, at 1:00 pm.
